GIRL GUIDES South Africa supports the following WAGGGS statement:
Statement from the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts on the kidnap of girls Nigeria
The World Association of Girl Guides and Girls Scouts (WAGGGS), the largest voluntary movement for girls and young women in the world, are deeply shocked and angered at the kidnapping over 200 schoolgirls in Nigeria. To kidnap girls and young women from the safety of their school is a clear violation of their human rights, to also publicly use the threat of violence against the girls and young women , including sexual violence, is appalling and totally unacceptable. Our thoughts are with the families of the girls and young women who must be suffering unimaginable pain and also with the Nigerian Girl Guides Association as they reach out to support the efforts to #BringBackOurGirls at this time.
We demand that those responsible return every single girl to safety without delay and call on all international parties to use all resources necessary to secure the safe return of the girls and young women.
We now need Brownie Packs, Guides and Rangers to send in their applications for pen-pals.
Since Nelson Mandela passed away last year we have had more enquiries for pen-pals, people wanting to know more about South Africa!
Troops and groups want to work with SA for their International knowledge badges and at this time of the year they also want to exchange Thinking Day messages.
We are especially looking for groups to communicate with troops overseas, USA being the main country requesting these. A Canadian troop has said that one of their adult leaders returned from Cape Town recently after studying abroad, they are very eager to learn about Guiding in South Africa.
The Acting Secretary, Hilary White, has not had any feedback from her last circular and is presuming that all girls that have been linked are in communication with their pen friend. We look forward to sending out new certificates this year!
All names that were listed last year have now been removed from the data base, ready to start the data base afresh this year
The newest application form for a Pen Friend is available in the last Guiding SA and also from the National Centre or this Website
